Find information about Cal State San Marcos personal checks, registering in a technical degree program to develop job skills, and taking free practice tests online. Which college degrees will give you the best chances of finding employment after graduation? Some students select a major because it offers practical training that will be valuable in the workplace. Other students choose their major simply because they enjoy the subject material. Concentration in a technical field demands a lot of study, but the rewards are equally impressive. Job satisfaction, higher salary, and employment security are the main incentives. The most popular college major is business administration, split evenly between men and women. On the other hand, men make up the vast majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list.

Online courses foster faculty innovation in teaching, by requiring professors to develop new course materials. Distance education reduces the need for high-priced course textbooks, as many books are now available on Kindle, Google Books, or as shareware. If you so choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Advanced Placement exams (AP Exams) are offered in a variety of subjects, offering college credit for classes that you have taken. Test yourself with free practice exams, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests. If you earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, you may be granted advanced placement in college.

Online Courses - MOOCs

Cal State San Marcos personal checksThe best college for a student is not necessarily the highest ranking school in the Forbes or US News listings, but the college that offers a student rewarding career chances. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year college, and still you may earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate earlier, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your spare time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing cloud-based software, interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps.

An online degree may be just as marketable as a college degree that was earned on campus. Udemy online learning is a new startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers over 4,000 micro-lectures served through YouTube. Coursera, a competing software platform, has millions of enrolled students from around the world. Recently, MIT announced that it's open courseware platform will be available to students and instructors at no cost.

College Admissions

Depending on the schools that you're applying to, the admissions process can vary from a simple formula that weighs grades and test scores, to a subjective review of your entire application. Public universities are more likely to evaluate applicants based on grades and test scores alone, while private universities tend to be more holistic. About half of colleges use a waiting list, particularly those which are more selective, and it's important to remember that almost 30% of wait-listed students are eventually accepted. On average, over half of juniors retaking the SAT as a senior saw improvements in their scores, so test yourself with practice exams online.

Financial Aid

The ScholarshipExperts.com website is a subscriber scholarship search service. Borrowers of privately subsidized student loans may face the same restrictions to bankruptcy discharge as in the case of government based loans. Please note that financial aid application deadlines are strictly enforced by the financial aid office. The official FAFSA website is www.fafsa.ed.gov and is free. Student loans typically have variable interest rates while federal student loans have fixed rates. Consumers should be aware that some private loans require substantial up-front origination fees as well.

Federal Direct Student Loans are funded by Treasury bonds. Private student loans, however, are not guaranteed, and are offered directly to students by a commercial bank, employee credit union, or finance company. Student loans saddle graduating students with substantial debt, and can't be dismissed easily. Student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution, but the interest rates are prohibitively high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. If you do end up using credit cards to meet some expenses, pay off the outstanding balance in full every month, or else you may be subject to sudden interest rate changes.

Nursing & Medical Job Listings

Earning a CNA degree (Certified Nursing Assistant) is the first step towards becoming a fully-qualified nurse. Most CNA programs can be completed within a few months, allowing you to join the workforce quickly. The next step in a nursing career is to become a LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) or LVN ( Licensed Vocational Nurse). These are year-long programs, in which you'll work under an RN distributing meds, treating wounds, and providing basic patient care.

In order to become an RN (Registered Nurse), a bachelors degree in nursing is recommended. RN's command a greater salary, and are responsible for an enlarged scope of practice over LPNs and CNAs. Students will receive classroom instruction and clinical training in a hospital setting. A 4-year BSN program allows students to further specialize in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics and mental health. After completing your nursing education, you must be licensed by the state in which you'll be practicing, given that state boards of nursing each have specific certification requirements.
